A Celebration of the Life & Times of Mike Vanderberg

All of us at Dunegrass are deeply saddened by the passing of Mike Vanderberg. We would like to invite you to join with us in remember a man who meant so much to Dunegrass, Empire and so many.

Dunegrass founder Mike VanderbergOn Sunday (September 30, 2007) there will be a celebration honoring the memory of Empire resident and Sleeping Bear Dunegrass & Blues Festival founder Mike Vanderberg.

The daylong event features live music at Johnson Park from noon - 10 PM from Dunegrass regulars including 3rd Coast, Cabin Fever, The Corvairs, Song of the Lakes, Beach Bards, The Wranglers, The Jelly Roll Blues Band, and more (no glass bottles please). There will also be kids games, a raffle and silent auction at the park and community potluck from 2 PM until it's gone (main dish provided).

You can make a donation at ANY Huntington Bank under "The Michael Vanderberg Family Fund" and for questions or to volunteer call 231.313.3474.

The Glen Arbor Sun (who provided the photo) has an article on the celebration and also a nice memorial piece by F. Josephine Arrowood called Mike Vanderberg: Free Thinker, Anarchist, Village Anchor - both of which you'll appreciate if you knew Mike … or even if you didn't.

July, 20 2007 at Dunegrass Kick-off Party w/ The Larry McCray Band

Doors open at 6:00pm–show starts at 7:00pm
Tickets are $15, kids 12 and under free

Blues guitarist Larry McCrayGrassroots Productions invites you and your family to the 2007 Sleeping Bear Dunegrass and Blues Festival Kick-off Party with the Larry McCray Band. Enjoy Harry Potter Friday Night Live in downtown Traverse City and then an evening of rhythm and blues in the historic City Opera House.

Guitarist Larry McCray is one of a handful of talented young blues performers leading the genre across boundaries and into the new century. McCray's savage blues-rock guitar and warm, soulful vocals have drawn attention worldwide. McCray's hard work paid off when he became the first artist signed by Virgin Records blues division - Pointblank Records. In 1998, “Born To Play The Blues” moved the story of McCray's broadly appealing music forward another giant step. Bold, brawny, often dazzling guitar lines are matched with confident, soul-drenched vocals. Understated funk rhythms and crunchy rock riffs meet searing slow blues and booty-bumping shuffles.

Grassroots Productions invite you to come early to look around the newly renovated City Opera House and enjoy food and beer available from local establishments including: Pangea's Pizza, Popkies (popcorn), Higher Grounds (fair trade coffee), and Short’s Brewing Company (hand-crafted beer)

Tickets are available through the City Opera House Box Office, Oryana Natural Foods, East Shore Market in Beulah, and Cedar City Market in Cedar.
